connecting to a different server

Can we connect to a different server on the same job to read a dataset. I want to connect to the dev. server from the production server to read the dataset in dev. server. Is this possible? If so how?

You should be able to specify the development server as a resource in the configuration file and do it that way. Please note, however, that I have not tried this.
