Hi all, I am a ds newbie.

I have seen the following screenshot on ibm datastage architecture description and it seems that the service tiers is not required in some usage. If so, when does the client (like designer) can directly connect to engine without passing by service tiers?

see following image:

Just guessing on the subject, is it a "required tier?"

It might be of interest that prior to version 8, there was only the engine tier and the client tier. It is amazing how much code has been added over the years.

Welcome aboard.

The diagram is misleading. The services are required before you can make any connection, since your authentication is processed by the login and security service.
